I’ve always been a voracious reader. As a boy I went through the comic book phase with a vengeance. I could probably retire if I had some of the titles I’ve owned in the past. I read most of the classic adventure novels by such authors as Burroughs, Wells, and Stevenson. Reading was a way of escape from a less than perfect home life with an alcoholic, and often abusive stepfather. The stories I read fed an already active imagination and they served as vehicles that would take me on wondrous adventures to exotic places. Places where I was free from the fears and feelings of inadequacy I often suffered from in real life.

When I was eleven years old, I spent the weekend with my twin cousins who lived in a nearby town in West Texas. They couldn’t wait to tell me of their experience at church the Sunday before. They told me they got “saved”. I had no idea what that really meant. My family seldom, if ever attended church. I knew the baby in the manger was called Jesus, and he was the Son of God, and I knew He died on the cross, but that was the extent of my religious experience. But my cousins were vigilant with their witness of their new-found faith, and they asked me to attend church with them that Sunday. And because of their witness, and the Bible-based, salvation-centered message of the preacher that Sunday morning, I surrendered to Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

There was no fanfare at home when I told what had happened to me during my stay with my cousins, although my mother seemed pleased. She dug out a New Testament Storybook Bible she had won at some kind of Sunday School contest as a girl, and gave it to me. It was a hardback book with a portrait of Jesus on the cover. It covered the major stories in the New Testament in one or two pages, such as Christ’s birth, the woman at the well, Jesus feeding the 5000, etc.

I’ll never forget reading that book. It was as if I was in the crowd as Jesus performed His miracles, or taught the people. I wasn’t only reading, it was as if I was actually there. I find myself struggling to find the words to describe the experience. It was like I was actually taking part in the stories as they unfolded. I actually remember having to “snap back” to the present each time I read it! I fully understand the concept of “getting lost in a novel”, but this was different. It was . . . much deeper.

I believe that as I read that story book Bible as a young Christian, God was driving home to me the reality and truth of His Word. I have loved the Scriptures ever since. Although I haven’t always lived by them, I know them to be inspired, inerrant, and infallible. They have cut my heart, comforted my soul, and calmed my fears. They light the path of truth through a world of deception. They are God’s Holy words!

The Apostle Paul reminds us:

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

2 TIMOTHY 3:16,17

” . . . and ye shall be as gods . . . ,” hissed the serpent. (Genesis 3:5)

The Command

And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.” Genesis 9:1

Fallen humanity has a short memory.  Just two generations after God’s judgment of a worldwide flood upon mankind for his rebellious apostasy, he once again chose to disregard the command of God for the siren call of humanistic endeavor.  The Lord’s command to Noah and his family was plain, “Replenish the earth.”  And mankind promptly disobeyed God’s mandate to repopulate the post-flood earth and  gathered under the leadership of one who would be king in the plain of Shinar.

The Conqueror

“And Cush begat Nimrod
: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.  He was a mighty hunter before the LORD:  wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.”  Genesis 10: 8, 9

Nimrod, whose name means, “Let Us Revolt”, was the great grandson of the Patriarch, Noah.  We’re told he was “a mighty one”, and “a mighty hunter”, but we’re not told why he was assigned these titles.  Was he a hunter of man, or beast? The context is dealing with men, so it is reasonable to suggest his exploits were of a moral and spiritual nature.  Regardless, the Scriptures make it clear that he was a celebrity and a conqueror in the world after the flood.  He gathered the people to rule over them by establishing the most prominent pagan city in biblical history.

The City

“And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.”  Genesis 10:10

King Nimrod was the founder of Babylonia, or the Babylonian empire located in the Plain of Shinar, or modern day Iraq.  It consisted of the four cities listed in Genesis 10: 10, with Babel as its capital.  The godless government Nimrod established was despotic and satanic (see Isaiah 14: 12-16).  It’s occultic influence is still felt in the contemporary world.  Babel, which became the infamous city of Babylon was Satan’s post-flood establishment of false religion, idolatry, and humanism.  The cities of the Plain, along with Assyrian cities, such as Nineveh – also founded by Nimrod – were the homes of the people groups that plagued the children of Israel throughout the biblical account.

“And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.  And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.  And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly.  And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.  And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we are scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”  Genesis 11: 1-4

When man switches focus from the Lord God to himself delusions of humanistic grandeur are sure to follow.  Such was the case with the builders of Babel.  Notice the man-centered plan.  “Let us make brick . . .”,” Let us build us a city and a tower . . .”, “Let us make us a name . . .”  God’s word, will , or way was not even considered in this grandiose scheme.  They had gone as far as they were going to go for God.  After all, the mandate He prescribed was dangerous and difficult.  Filling the earth was a big job.  The post-flood world was a dangerous place.  Predatory beasts now roamed the earth and the extreme weather patterns were often difficult to survive.  Not unlike the modern Christian who gives up on God’s work because of difficulties in the ministry, Noah’s descendants threw in the towel, and succumbed to the flesh, and heeded the voices of other spirits, while ignoring the voice of God.

Walking by sight instead of faith in the living God, the people logically concluded that there is strength in numbers, and that mankind is an intelligent, innovative creature, capable of invention and discovery on his own.  Unity became the ultimate goal of Nimrod’s subjects.  Communication is key to unity, and the single language of the day helped the process tremendously.  Consider the fact that Nimrod didn’t have to cross any cultural boundaries to sell his plan.  He simply had to persuade the masses, and I suspect he did so by speech, intimidation and by deadly force.  There were undoubtedly those who opposed this grand plan of unification of the masses, for God always has His remnant.  But, just as in any totalitarian regime today, they were quickly compelled with violence to surrender to the dictator’s cause.

The tower, likely a ziggurat which is a pyramid-like structure found throughout the world, was a monument to false religion. Unlike a pyramid, the ziggurat has recessed steps along the outside to allow access to the place of worship at the top of the structure.  Babel was to be the center of worship for Nimrod’s empire.  The word, Babel, means “the gate of the gods”.  Exactly which “gods” were worshiped is unknown, although it has been speculated that the hosts, or celestial bodies of heaven were worshiped, and the top of the tower served as an observatory.  Regardless, the tower was man’s attempt to reach heaven through means other than the path laid out by the One True God.

Aside from its religious significance, the tower was a symbol to human progress and achievement, built to “make a name” for mankind.  Not unlike the various “towers” erected in the name of human endeavor found throughout our modern world, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Trump building, the Sears building, etc., this tower was a monument to mankind.

I believe this era of history was the original foreshadowing of the world of a future Antichrist who will rule a world government and establish a world religion, and will compel humanity to ultimately worship him.

The Confusion

“And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.  And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.  Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. ”  Genesis 11:5, 6

Communication is the key to relationship, and relationship is the key to society.  Words are important.  God spoke the universe into existence at creation, He revealed Himself as the “logos”,or the living Word of God, in Christ, and He inspired men to write the Holy Bible, or the canon of Scripture.  Among its many lessons, the account of Babel in the book of Genesis shows us clearly that when communication breaks down, human culture and society will splinter.

God’s confounding of the languages at Babel had its desired effect.  After God’s intervention, the residents who were still  able to understand each other at Babel naturally banded together to form many groups that eventually scattered across the planet.   It is interesting that  linguists believe that the thousands of languages and dialects spoken in our world today probably originated from about 100 root languages.  Perhaps this is a clue as to how many groups dispersed from Babel.  Whatever the actual number, the cultures and nations throughout history, all have their origin in Nimrod’s great city.

AGENDA 2 – The Ways of Death

Michael C. Lewis

“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

Proverbs 14:12

Death is the undisputed champion with a success rate of 100 percent. This is the universal reality on our decaying planet. The Lord God, because of His great mercy, allows death to reign in this fallen world so that mankind will not be burdened by his sin for all of eternity. The end of sin is death (see Romans 6:7).

Mankind has demonstrated time and time again that his ways lead to premature, and unnatural death. Since the time of Cain, humanity’s first-born (Genesis 4:1-17), murderous men have abounded on the stage of world history. When man chooses a path without God–as did the unrepentant Cain–he’s following a road that leads to a cliff at the edge of an abyss. And humanism is that godless path.

Humanism, as first promoted in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:5), has historically proven itself as the philosophy of death. The French Revolution of the 19th century is a good example. Blood flowed deep in the streets of Paris as radical humanists tried to remove the monarchy and all vestiges of God from their country. Humanism in the 20th century gave us the concentration camps of Nazi Germany, the gulags of the U.S.S.R., and the killing fields of southeast Asia. The death tolls under these regimes alone numbered in the tens of millions. Add that to the lives lost in two world wars, Vietnam, and Korea, and it boggles the mind.

Here in America, humanist issues such as abortion on demand, the “green dragon” of radical environmentalism, and the homosexual agenda are currently moving us ever closer to the cliff’s edge. These are all promoters of death. The abortionists are killing our future citizens at an alarming rate. The green movement is claiming that mankind is overpopulating the earth and polluting our planet with Co2 causing “global warming”. And the homosexual proponents have given us a legalized promiscuous lifestyle that cannot reproduce. As a matter of fact, the only things the adherents of the “gay” lifestyle have produced for society — in this writer’s humble opinion — are incurable sexually transmitted disease, such as AIDS, and a gender confused generation. Add to this the loss of life caused by terrorists and our current “war on terror” and one wonders if Satan’s present focus for America and the world might be population control.

Satan has placed his humanist agents in highly influential places on the world stage. There are U.N. officials, media moguls, and liberal politicians today who are calling loudly for a worldwide reduction in human population to 500,000,000 in order to save our resource depleted planet. That’s a reduction of 6,500,000,000 persons from the current population of seven billion! Death on a massive scale is the only way to achieve such a horrific goal.

This all sounds like sensationalism, I know. And I’m not saying it will come to pass — God is still sovereign over His creation. But, the above facts can be checked. There are godless movers and shakers in our present society that are calling for such an agenda of death. These facts and basic spiritual logic should reveal to the discerning Bible student the deadly and satanic ideology of humanism prevalent in our world.

So, what should the Christian response be to such knowledge?  Consider these words of God spoken through a great Old Testament prophet:

“So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.” Ezekiel 33: 7-9

Just as God set Ezekiel a “watchman” over Israel, He expects us to be watchmen in our culture and to “blow the trumpet” of warning at the sight of impending danger (Ezekiel 33: 3-6). But in order to be diligent watchmen we must be informed so that we can effectively engage in the battle set before us. As in any military campaign, we must gather all the intelligence available to us, so that we can effectively, and victoriously meet the enemy.   Knowledge must be acquired, and spiritual discernment must be employed. Remember what Paul said about our “warfare”? It’s “not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12

Paul goes on to tell us how to dress and arm ourselves for battle using the “full armor of God” in that same chapter of Ephesians, but he does this on the assumption that we will join in the battle raging around us. In order to do that, we must be able to discern truth from deception, and recognize the “wiles of the devil”, who is the commander and chief of the enemy army.

There are three strategic areas of intelligence, or knowledge that must be obtained if we are to be the spiritual marines that God desires us to be. They are:

  1. Know the Scriptures!

The “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” of Ephesians 6 is our primary weapon. It is an offensive and defensive weapon which allows the Christian to hold his position, as well as to take new ground. The Scriptures shine the “light” of truth in a world of deceptive darkness (Psalm 119:130). The Holy Bible is the only unfailing and true guide for the Christian journey. It gives us the light we need to traverse the darkness that blankets society as it reveals the deception around us. God’s Holy Scriptures are both revealing light, and unchanging truth (Psalm 119:105 & John 17:17). They are the standard by which the Christian measures all things. Without this standard of God’s unfailing truth, we are at the mercy of man’s worldly, ever-changing theories and opinions.

  1. Know the times!

We all need to realize that America is not the country it once was. Our grandparents lived in a different world. They held the line against the anti-Christian influences of their day. These ideologies, such as Marxism, Darwinian Evolution, Liberalism in the Church, and the New Age movement were embraced by the radical thinkers of the late 19th to early 20th centuries. And these radical ideas gained strength as America’s eager young minds were captured by godless university professors and liberal politicians. As a result, Christianity’s influential light is burning dim in our time.

Those same eager young minds have since become the teachers and politicians of today, and their godless worldviews and politics have worked like voracious termites feeding feverishly on the very foundation of Christianity, and they have been horrifyingly successful at consuming the cross of redemption and undermining the Christian faith in our own post-modern era of history. God’s absolutes are no longer embraced by the majority. Relativism is the cry of the hour. Christians are quickly becoming marginalized, and even vilified in America today precisely because our society has tossed aside God’s word and embraced the humanistic lies being preached from the pulpit of secularism and radical atheism of this current generation.

It is extremely important that we examine the prevailing issues and ideologies of our day, and hold them up against the standard set by God, and sound the alarm against those that do not measure up!

  1. Know the enemy!

It is innately human to want to put a face on evil around us and we often do. It is not unusual to see images of people like Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden, or Jeffrey Dahlmer associated with the word “evil” in our world. But, although we see our fellow man committing atrocities and promoting sinful agendas, we need to realize that there is an unseen guide who takes the reins of humanity’s natural inclination to sin, and leads fallen people down the highway of misery and death. The Holy Bible calls this manipulator of sinful man Satan (ie. Deceiver), and tells us he is “as a roaring lion”, and he “walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). He is the originator and master of the ungodly craft of luring God’s image-bearers to rebellion and destruction, and he commands an innumerable army of evil spirits (ie. Fallen angels) to fulfill his agenda.

Although we must continue to seek justice by fighting the human “bad guys” who do the crimes and rebel against righteousness, we must realize that the ultimate war is in the spiritual realm, against the “principalities and powers” (Ephesians 6:12) that exist out of sight, yet they are hell-bent on our destruction. This war has been waged since its beginning in Eden, and will continue until Satan is cast into the lake of fire by God at the end of the thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ upon the earth (Revelation 20:10). Then, and only then, will the enemy be defeated for good, along with all vestiges of evil and sin.
As soldiers of the cross we will never bring lasting peace to this fallen world because we will never convert the whole of humanity to Christ. The lost will continue to act like the lost until Christ‘s return! With every submitting “whosoever will” we witness to there will be many more “whosoever won’ts”! Our mandate is to present the gospel, and disciple those who will submit to Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19-20).

If we know the commandments of Holy Scripture and contrast them with the things happening in our world today, we can obediently sound the trumpet of warning by fulfilling our mandate to Christ and offer the hope of the gospel to the deceived and the deceivers alike. The church must do this by being involved in soul-winning campaigns, and being voices of righteousness in the community, the nation, and the world (Acts 1:8).

Do the world’s “ways of death” concern you? If so, you must be engaged in the spiritual war by diligently watching for the wiles of the devil, ready to battle skillfully with the “sword of the Spirit”. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is humanity’s only hope. He alone is the “Way” of “Life” (John 14:6)!

Michael C. Lewis

There is a conspiracy at work.
The homosexual movement and women’s rights groups have long been leading society on a downward spiral toward moral depravity. Make no mistake, the family, human society’s basic institution is their target. Consider the following:
Eleven states now recognize “gay marriage” as legal unions, affording these obscenities the same rights and privileges as heterosexual marriages. The military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on homosexuality has been abolished, endangering the unity and morale that warfare demands. Homosexuals are now allowed membership in the Boy Scouts, assuring confusion and consternation to an untold number of future male adolescents. “Reality” programming which promotes deviant sexual lifestyles, such as polygamy, and homosexual or bisexual behavior is running rampant on TV, infecting the minds and hearts of worldwide viewers.  Look for a “polygamy rights” movement on the heels of the homosexual agenda.
The God-given dividing line between male and female has been effectively blurred by the same-sex lobbyists and women’s rights organizations such as the National Organization for Women and Planned Parenthood. These movements were on the forefront of putting our service women on the battlefield as fighting soldiers on the front lines of war. After all, the advocates assure us, the male as defender and protector, and the female as nurturer are simply the archaic notions of obsolete biblical text. They understand, better than many Christians, the Holy Bible is either “absolute” or “obsolete” in its instruction and truth.
Another indicator of our nation’s slide toward depravity is our insistence on killing our unborn. The slaughter of the innocents continues to happen daily in America–under the banner of Women’s Rights.  The number of legal abortions that have been performed in this country alone since 1973 is well over 50,000,000.
As a Bible believer, I understand that we live in a fallen world, led by fallen men and the forces who give them power (see Ephesians 6:12). And that knowledge makes me a conspiracy theorist of sorts, though my beliefs are based less on “theory” and more on Biblical fact. I know that depraved unbelievers will act on their depravity, but I don’t believe all the deviance, or the evils of this world are simply the results of the mistaken decisions of fallible men. There is another, more formidable and insidious power at work.
Every idea of man that contradicts the plan laid out by God in the Holy Bible first originated in the ever-rebelling mind of the first deceiver, Satan. He wants to destroy you and your family, and by extension, all of humanity. It is Satan’s conspiracy against God and God’s creation which we witness in the degradation of human society. And this diabolical agenda is becoming more pervasive in the hour in which we now live.
We live in a time when evil is being promoted, and the good things in society are being vilified. The Holy Bible clearly states that these things will happen. Isn’t it incredible that as I write this, fundamental Bible-believing Christians in America are listed as potential terrorists by various federal law enforcement groups such as Homeland Security? What once was considered a good and positive influence in our country that extended to the whole world is now considered by many as subversive and evil.
Despite all this rampant moral chaos and overt evil infesting our nation, Christians should be aware that the Holy Bible does assure us that good will prevail. Although it may seem that the days of fundamental Christianity are numbered, God will always have His remnant of believers. It is our calling, indeed our mandate to be that remnant of light as we traverse this sad, dark world. After all, this is not our home. For we who believe, there is a rapture right around the corner. We will be taken from the worst of it.
The key to having the “peace of God, which passeth all understanding” (Philippians 4:7) in times like these is to Read, Retain, and Rest on the promises found in God’s inerrant, infallible and immutable Word. Jesus, Himself assured us, “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). And it is the truth which makes us free (John 8:32).
So, even as you observe this generation forsaking the narrow path of righteousness for the six lane super highway that leads to destruction, take heart, Beloved. Light will eventually pierce this present darkness. Jesus Christ, as Lord of lords, and King of kings is coming back to dissipate the current gloom. He will put an end to the satanic agenda which now permeates our culture.
In the mean time, let’s be focused on fulfilling the work of our Lord’s “Great Commission” and snatch as many souls as we can from Satan’s grasp.
Time is of the essence. Even so, come Lord Jesus.
